ENROLLING AS AN OPEN AND DISTANCE LEARNING (ODL) STUDENT
-
As an ODL Learner
Our courses are designed to allow self-paced learning with the option to interact with instructors through video calls or chat. Each course includes clear content, focused learning methods, engaging visuals, quizzes, exercises with feedback, and real-world examples. This approach helps beginners understand difficult topics and supports professionals wanting to update their skills. Along with the course, you'll get links to extra resources, recommended readings, and self-study guides to help you apply what you’ve learned.
-
Student Identity Authentication
Universiti Tun Hussein Onn confirms the identity of students participating in Open Distance Learning through methods such as a secure login and passcode or proctored exams. For certain courses, proctored exams may be required as part of the final assessment, where a qualified proctor approved by the instructor will verify the student's identity. Additionally, online proctoring is available as an alternative to ensure the student's identity is properly confirmed.
-
Student Orientation
First-time ODL learners must complete the 'ODL Student Orientation course' before classes start. The orientation will appear under ‘Home' page in the AuthorODL learning system. It helps students get familiar with Moodle and provides useful tips for success in online learning.
To access AuthorODL, visit https://authorodl.uthm.edu.my, enter your username and password on the login page, and you will be able to view your courses, access materials, and engage in learning activities. If you encounter any issues, verify your login details or contact the Help Desk on https://odl.uthm.edu.my/support/help-desk for assistance.
COURSE AND EXAMINATION
-
Course Registration and Withdrawal
Students must register for courses at the start of each semester. Not registering will result in the termination of their studies. A minimum of one (1) course is required in a normal semester, with a maximum of eighteen (18) credits, and ten (10) credits in a short semester. If terminated, students may apply for reinstatement within two (2) semesters, depending on the available study period; otherwise, they must reapply. To avoid late fees, register on time and check your academic record regularly. You can add or drop courses within the allowed period.
While discouraged, students can withdraw from a course within a specified timeframe during each semester. In cases where a student has attended several weeks of lessons but decides to discontinue the subject due to various reasons, they may withdraw from the course before the designated withdrawal deadline. In such instances, a fee will be charged after the designated withdrawal deadline of the current semester. It is essential that students consult and refer to their respective program coordinators throughout the process.
-
Class Attendance
In the Open and Distance Learning (ODL) program, students are not required to attend classes in person. However, lecturers may conduct online classes during certain weeks. While attendance for these sessions is not mandatory, students are strongly encouraged to join, as it can enhance their understanding of the course material.
Participation is assessed through activities set in the LMS-AuthorODL platform, including weekly assignments, training sessions, and access to self-directed learning materials. Students must actively engage in at least 80% of these activities by the end of the semester to meet the course requirements.
If you face any challenges completing your assignments or meeting participation requirements, please contact your lecturers or respective faculties for support.

Study Postponement
POSTPONEMENT OF STUDIES allows a student to take an official break from enrollment, but approval depends on the validity of the request, particularly for international students on student visas. While requests for postponement are rarely granted, they may be reviewed individually. Failure to inform the university of an absence for a semester or longer than three months will result in automatic termination of studies, and the student will need to reapply. International students must show proof of air ticket bookings for departure during the deferment period. Students are advised not to postpone for minor reasons, as it may delay their academic progress. Typically, only one semester of postponement is allowed per request, and students can only postpone for a total of two semesters during their program. Further postponements could lead to re-enrollment as a new student, causing challenges for international students, including visa issues and delays with the Immigration Department.POSTPONEMENT OF COURSEWORK OR EXAMINATION SUBJECT Students who wish to postpone coursework or an exam after the module begins must obtain written approval from the Course Coordinator. Postponing a module could extend the course by up to 8 months until the module is available again. Students can defer exams for a maximum of three subjects, with valid reasons such as illness (medical certificate required), bereavement (death certificate required), work commitments (employer letter required), or being overseas (flight ticket required). If students fail to submit the deferment form and necessary documents, they will receive a grade of ZERO and fail the subject, requiring them to retake it. If a deferment is not formally requested, the Board of Examiners will mark the absence as a fail, with no chance for appeal.
POSTPONEMENT PROCEDURE The request for postponement must be accompanied by a duly completed Deferment Form, which must be circulated to the relevant Department/School/Faculty for authorised signatures before submission to the Dean. All deferment forms must be supported by evidence.

Withdrawal of Studies
Students may apply for withdrawal of studies at any time but are not permitted to leave their studies until their withdrawal application is approved by the University. It is essential that students consult and refer to their respective program coordinators throughout the process.
