Enrolling As An Open & Distance Learning (ODL)

  • As an ODL Learner

Our courses are designed to allow self-paced learning with the option to interact with instructors through video calls or chat. Each course includes clear content, focused learning methods, engaging visuals, quizzes, exercises with feedback, and real-world examples. This approach helps beginners understand difficult topics and supports professionals wanting to update their skills. Along with the course, you'll get links to extra resources, recommended readings, and self-study guides to help you apply what you’ve learned.

  • Student Identity Authentication

Universiti Tun Hussein Onn verifies students' identities in Open Distance Learning through secure logins, passcodes, or proctored exams. For some courses, a proctored exam may be required as the final assessment, with a qualified proctor verifying the student's identity. Online proctoring is also available as an alternative.

  • Student Orientation

First-time ODL learners must complete the 'ODL Student Orientation course' before classes begin. The course will be available on the ‘Home' page in the AuthorODL system and helps students get familiar with Moodle and online learning tips.

To access AuthorODL, go to https://authorodl.uthm.edu.my, log in with your username and password, and you’ll be able to view courses, access materials, and participate in activities. If you have issues, check your login details or contact the Help Desk at https://odl.uthm.edu.my/support/help-desk.

COURSE AND EXAMINATION

  • Course Registration and Withdrawal

Students must register for courses each semester. If they don't, their studies will be terminated. A minimum of one course is required, with a maximum of 18 credits in a normal semester and 10 credits in a short semester. If terminated, students can apply for reinstatement within two semesters, or they must reapply. To avoid late fees, register on time and check your academic record. You can add or drop courses during the allowed period.

Students can withdraw from a course before the deadline, but a fee will apply if done after the deadline. Always consult your program coordinator during this process.

  • Class Attendance

In the Open and Distance Learning (ODL) program, students don't need to attend in-person classes, but online classes may be held some weeks. While attendance is not required, students are encouraged to join for better understanding of the course.

Participation is measured through activities on the LMS-AuthorODL platform, including weekly assignments, training sessions, and self-learning materials. Students must complete at least 80% of these activities by the end of the semester to meet course requirements.

If you have trouble completing assignments or meeting participation requirements, contact your lecturers or faculty for help.

  • Study Postponement

    Postponement of Studies
lets students take a break from their studies, but approval depends on the reason, especially for international students on visas. Requests are rarely approved and will be reviewed individually. If you don't inform the university about your absence for more than three months, your studies will be automatically terminated, and you'll need to reapply. International students must show proof of flight bookings. Avoid postponing for small reasons, as it can delay your progress. You can only postpone for one semester per request, with a maximum of two semesters during your program. More postponements may require re-enrollment as a new student, causing visa and immigration problems.

Postponement of Coursework or Exams requires written approval from the Course Coordinator. You can defer up to three exams with valid reasons (illness, death, work commitments, or being overseas) with supporting documents. If you don't submit the deferment form and documents, you'll get a grade of ZERO and fail the subject. No deferment request means a fail with no chance to appeal.

Postponement Procedure: Submit a completed Deferment Form with required signatures and evidence to the Dean.

  • Withdrawal of Studies

Students may apply for withdrawal of studies at any time but are not permitted to leave their studies until their withdrawal application is approved by the University. It is essential that students consult and refer to their respective program coordinators throughout the process.
